“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,
and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.”
“If the deceitful disciple wishes to pretend to be sincere, he cannot manage it.”
“Taken from the book ‘Al-Anwar al-Qudsiyya fi Ma’rifat Qawa’id al-Sufiyya’ by the knower of God, Sidi Abdul Wahhab al-Sha’rani (may Allah be pleased with him):
“The function of the Sheikh is to extract from the disciple what lies latent within him and nothing else. Indeed, Allah the Exalted has infused into every soul all that pertains to its owner, whether praises or faults. Whatever the Sheikh commands or prohibits from him is indeed latent within his soul. The Sheikh possesses nothing to give the disciple except what is already within him.
“So, the ruling for the beginner in his affair is like the hidden kernel within the palm tree. Here, it is about sincerity in the path or falsehood within it. If he is sincere, the fruits of his sincerity will branch out and bear until they overshadow all his neighbors, who will partake of its fruits. Indeed, it spreads to all the people of his city or region, benefiting them, and his sincerity and righteousness become apparent to both the private and the public. If he desires to conceal his righteousness from them, he cannot.
“If the disciple is deceitful in his love for the path, the tree of his falsehood, pretense, hypocrisy, and ostentation branches out. Even if he tries to pretend to be sincere, he cannot manage it. Because his wicked deeds belie his claims, the path rejects him until he is joined with the corruption of the masses, facing punishment for his falsehood on the path of Allah, the Almighty.
“It may be that Allah grants him a fragrance of sincerity, then takes it away from him. So, people say about him, ‘So-and-so lost the fragrance of his lineage’s path, leaving nothing of its fragrances in him.’
“He then becomes lax in discipline, grows his hair, dons wool, adorns himself with the garments of the poor, and people see him as lacking manners, almost naked in front of everyone.
“So, my brother, ensure sincerity in seeking the path of Allah’s righteous people, or else the path will reject you, even if it’s prolonged. May Allah guide you.”
And Allah knows best.
